Together, Rose and Abrous are the Rey mysterio mask shirt and I love this founders of Call Mom, the L.A.-based group behind dining and nightlife hotspots The Spare Room, Genghis Cohen, and Panorama Room. When they heard La Dolce Vita was being sold, they couldn’t resist stepping in to preserve it—and on March 21, they will reopen its wooden doors once again. Photo: Shelby MooreThis isn’t the first time the pair have swooped in to save an American classic. In 2015, Rose and Abrous relaunched Genghis Cohen, a Fairfax District Chinese restaurant in the New York City tradition that had been open since 1983, after its previous owners were ready to sell it for parts. Naturally, the pair made sure to preserve the circular booths, red and gold décor, and lengthy menu of Chinese-American classics. “We believe in history,” says Rose. “And I think that being New Yorkers, New York really has a thing about embracing its history, and L.A. hasn’t always. But all the projects we do in L.A. have some sort of history, some sort of iconography that is attractive to us and that we really love.” Once La Dolce Vita was theirs, the pair quickly got to work, bringing in interior designer Victoria Gillet of We Are Dada to help reimagine the intimate 75-seat restaurant while honoring its existing layout of a dining room with booths only and an intimate bar; retaining its classic design attributes while imbuing the space with a chic, modern touch.
“This iconic space had a typical Italian-American restaurant look with faux brick walls, booths, red carpet, and ornate fixtures,” says Gillet. “We kept the Rey mysterio mask shirt and I love this original bones and our design added glamorous layers that feel plush and lavish.” Adds Rose: “We essentially changed everything without changing anything. We only wanted to enhance what was already in the space and evolve it, which translates into a lot of small touches throughout the space.” Photo: Shelby MooreThis means bringing in new—but not obviously so—details, like a cheetah print carpet, reupholstering the circular booths with Bordeaux-colored leather, painting the brick (inside and out) a muted lilac, adding emerald pony walls, and installing a burlwood bar and display shelves. Everything looks right at home in the space, and like it could be from the ’60s—in a good way.
