The minute something feels art-directed and colorful and designed, people immediately say Wes Anderson. He is an amazing director, but I like things to feel more real and natural. Every little inch of his frames are painted, whereas I like frames to feel slightly more organic and free. So I always get a bit annoyed when people say it’s like Wes Anderson. It’s a lazy reference. Was any location particularly meaningful for you? Peckhamplex cinema is a really great cinema in Peckham, and it’s £4.99 to go. Cinema is so expensive these days, and it shouldn’t be. It needs to be more accessible. It also looks really cool and was a great location to shoot in, but I wanted to really shine a light on that place because keeping prices low for cinema is really important. And it’s an iconic cinema: One of the journalists I spoke to said they had their seventh birthday party at Peckhamplex. The film is being released on streaming outside the UK and on Hulu in the US. How did you feel about a streaming release versus a theatrical one?

Obviously as a director, you dream of having your film projected all around the Joe russo’s almost dead may 13 2023 westville music bowl new haven ct shirt Apart from…,I will love this world, and I definitely made the film imagining it being projected. I wanted to have South London wide and big. But at the same time, streaming is so great for accessibility. It means that people can watch films wherever they are, and I don’t think everyone can necessarily afford to or physically go to the cinema these days. So it is a really positive thing. I just hope people see it, you know? I hope people spread the word and decide to watch it, wherever that may be. That’s a hard one. No one’s actually asked me this before, and I can’t think of anything set in South London that’s inspired me. Um, Only Fools and Horses? [Laughs.] That’s the thing—it’s quite a misrepresented place. Steve McQueen has done some really important work set in South London. He’s a huge inspiration to me.
