His goal with the series was not to parody or send up the fashion world—as is so often the case with fashion-themed TV—but to highlight the singular position many male models find themselves in: being subjected to the male gaze in a way that other young men typically are not. “Young guys from oftentimes small towns or whatever, show up in New York, and suddenly are subject to what we typically would consider feminist issues or narratives. To be a model is quite literally to be objectified, to be subject to the male gaze, and you see that really impact their sexualities, their personalities, all of that. It’s great dramatic material. And it’s a way to tell stories about some of these really important feminist issues in a flipped or mirror-image way that’s fascinating—these are really good human stories.”
